Refurbishment Project
Hotel Bel-Air has embarked on an extensive refurbishment project that includes the renovation of all 91 rooms and suites, the famous Bar and the hotel’s restaurant, event spaces and private dining rooms. Additionally, a further 12 hillside guestrooms and suites, and a 12,000 square foot Spa with three additional suites will be developed within the hotel’s 12 acre grounds that are home to some of L.A.’s most beautiful and exotic gardens.
As we move forward with the project, we will:
- Maintain the existing iconic Spanish colonial beauty of the signature pink stucco buildings, red tile roofs, and majestic bell tower.
- Preserve our 12-acre private sanctuary of hundreds of plants, flowers, trees, and botanical wonders that grace the property including our wedding gazebo, the ethereal Swan Lake and our beloved swans.
- Reduce our water consumption by using state-of-the-art practices such as the storage and subsequent use of greywater for landscaping, recycling water in Swan Lake and using indoor conservation technologies such as low-flow toilets and fixtures in every guest room.
- Upgrade our infrastructure and technologies including a new more efficient central plant to lower our energy use throughout the hotel.
- Incorporate 12 new Terrace guestrooms and suites within the grounds, consistent with the architecture and quality of the hotel today featuring spanning views, outdoor fireplaces, plunge pools and extensive outdoor living areas.
- Finalize the new Spa with seven treatment rooms and three suites.
- Improve the guest experience in all of the existing rooms and suites, including refreshing the interiors and improving the in-room acoustics, lighting, plumbing, air-conditioning and technology.
- Upgrade the interiors in the Bar and Restaurant maintaining our signature services and offerings like private dining.
We hope that you will stay involved and up-to-date with our progress. We invite you to sign up to receive regular updates by signing up for our email list or visit us on Facebook.
Swan Lake Refurbishment
For months our resident swans have been watching all of the activity from their Swan Lake home since the beginning of the refurbishment project. The Bel-Air swans are well away from the construction and when they have their daily lunch of hearts of romaine it’s like nothing has changed at Hotel Bel-Air. Recently, the swans enjoyed the comfort of their pen for a few days in order to resurface the lake and install circulation pumps to ensure the cleanest water to glide in. Prior to the addition, the water supply naturally led through a stream from upper Stone Canyon that ran through the property and down the canyon. Now that the new system has been completed, they are happily flapping their wings again and enjoying the new crystal clear water! We are also happy to report that the installation of the new pumps will save our city 50,000 gallons of water a year.

La Prairie Spa UpdateThe new spa at Hotel Bel-Air has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. Our pastoral resort in the canyon never had a spa because of space, but now that it’s almost completed we are gearing up for what will be a fantastic 2011. Since the spa will be completed in advance of the rest of the project, we will be conducting months of training, testing, and refinements to ensure absolute perfection. When the hotel and the new La Prairie Spa at Hotel Bel-Air opens July 1, 2011 it will be a momentous event for the neighborhood and also our amazing city.
La Prairie Switzerland is one of the most highly respected skin care companies in the world. La Prairie products help prolong the youthful appearance of even the most delicate skin. Each one confronts the problem of premature aging, environmental hazards and the stress of contemporary life. La Prairie has an unparalleled commitment to excellence, luxury and the science of skincare so we felt they would be the most incredible partner to work with such a magical property. We will be working on custom Bel-Air treatments with La Prairie over the coming months and will share them with you as soon as we can. One detail we can share now is we will be featuring La Prairie as our in-room bath amenities.

The Refurbishment of a Culinary Icon: The Restaurant & Terrace
The Restaurant at Hotel Bel-Air was re-designed to maintain the unique and legendary character of the hotel, known for giving guests the sense of being in a luxurious private residence surrounded by gardens. Some of the historic elements will be restored while adding modern touches to encourage interesting juxstapositions between old and new. The indoor and outdoor environments of the hotel are intertwined, so we are enhancing the connection between the restaurants and the extraordinary garden experiences throughout the property.
Every guest will feel close to the gardens with the addition of an indoor/outdoor patio and windows that open to a lushly planted exterior green wall. Uncovered skylights and stacking doors let natural light pour into the space. A marble-clad hearth flanked by wine cellars creates a central focal point for the restaurant and the private dining/wine room includes a window overlooking directly into the kitchen so guests can enjoy a deeper culinary experience.
While dining on The Terrace, the perimeter will be enlivened with culinary activity to offer a complete casual garden dining experience. A cocktail bar provides a perfect late-night destination and then a great place to eat breakfast in the morning. The open kitchen features a wood-burning oven and newly inspired menu. Private cabanas offer a different way to dine overlooking our iconic Swan Lake.
